- Central nervous system
- Endocrine system
- Kidneys and other organs
And adversely affects
Mercury poisoning over long periods of time or heavy exposure to mercury vapor can result in brain damage and ultimately death.
Mercury poisoning is particularly toxic to fetuses and infants. Women who have been exposed to mercury in pregnancy have sometimes given birth to children with serious birth defects (see Minamata disease). Some of the toxic effects of mercury are reversible, either through specific therapy or through natural elimination of the metal after exposure has been discontinued. Mercury exposure in very young children can have severe neurological consequences.
However, heavy or prolonged exposure can do irreversible damage, particularly in fetuses, infants, and young children. Exposure to certain highly toxic compounds of mercury such as dimethylmercury can be fatal within hours or less.
Contents of Mercury test kit

- Empty liquid content from vial into test tube.
- Cap test tube and turn the test tube so that the cap is pointing towards the ground and liquid gets inside the cap. Then shake until the solution turns green
- The solution is now ready for testing the presence of mercury.
NB: Testing should be completed within 30 minutes of activating the solution (turn green) as it will deteriorate after that time.
How to test for mercury in the body
- Add the required volume of the sample solution (saliva, water, etc) to be tested into the green solution in the test tube using the pipette provided
- Close the test tube with the cap and shake vigorously. Allow the solutions to stand on the cap of the test tube for 1 minute.
- A colour change will indicate the presence of mercury (chart on label of kit).
- If there is no colour change, i.e...., the solution stays green, there are no mercury present.
Results from mercury testing kit
Result is measured accurately in parts per million.
Test for mercury saliva specimen preparation
Sputum (Saliva) Specimen preparation depending on the surface condition of amalgam fillings from dental treatment, their release of mercury ions into the oral cavity may be screened accurately. Users need to chew a stick of sugarless gum for about 10 minutes prior to using the mercury testing kit if testing for mercury due to fillings from dental treatment. Please do not swallow the saliva and collect about 2-3 ml. of saliva for screening.
Mercury heavy metal testing water Preparation
No preparation is necessary for testing water for mercury. The tap or other water collected can be tested for mercury and the reaction (result) would be immediate. Always use first morning water sample from faucet or tap. Use 3-4 ml of the water sample.
